Yes! You can definitely be an author without showing your face. There are no requirements at all for showing your face as an author. You can even publish under a pseudonym (a fake name) to ensure complete anonymity.
There is a slight caveat here though. If you are taking the traditional publishing route, either through an agent or going directly to publishers themselves, there may be an expectation that you will attend some events or do some level of publicity.
But self-publishers can enjoy total anonymity if they so choose.
